Best Sunset Overlooks in Shenandoah National Park for Engagement Photos

If you’re looking for the best mountain views in Virginia for your engagement session, you can’t go wrong with choosing Shenandoah National Park. There is something for everyone within the park including overlooks that require no hiking, trails that are an easy stroll to the top, stunning waterfalls, and the best views you could ask for. Here’s a complete guide to help you plan your engagement photos including the best sunset overlooks in Shenandoah National Park, choosing the best time to go, what to pack, and what to wear.

Best Overlooks on Skyline Drive

  1. Jewell Hollow Overlook – Mile Marker 36.4 – This is probably my favorite overlook in the park! Grassy knolls, beautiful mountain vistas, fairy-tale like forest, and rocks to climb and explore.
  2. Timber Hollow Overlook – Mile Marker 43 – Walk down path offering trails to explore
  3. Big Meadows – Mile Marker 51.2 – Offering a change in scenery and variety in your gallery. Open field with plenty of space to run around in
  4. Crescent Rock Overlook – Mile Marker 44.4 – The best golden hour magic can be made here for your portraits!

Tips for a perfect engagement session in Shenandoah National Park

  1. Timing is everything! While I typically love a good sunrise session, there are unfortunately not a whole lot of overlooks in the park that are east facing. I recommend starting the session about 2 hours before sunset to allow the best lighting and also plenty of time to explore. Opt for a day during the week is possible to avoid the crowds as much as possible.
  2. I always recommend to my couples to wear a more casual outfit first to allow for running around and fun poses such as a piggyback ride. For a second outfit change I recommend wearing something that will flow in the wind and allow movement. I LOVE dresses from Baltic Born, they photograph so well!
  3. Comfort is going to be your best friend when figuring out what to wear. While most of these overlooks are a park and walk, the terrain can be uneven and rocky at times.
  4. Bring props or accessories that are important to you and your relationship! If you skateboard in your free time then we can create some fun photos with that! Anything that can add a personal touch that can enhance your photos.

What to pack:

  1. Bug spray! Depending on the season, you’ll definitely want to bring gentle bug repellent to ensure you’re comfortable.
  2. Water and snacks – I don’t know about you but I love having a good snack on hand. It’s super important to stay hydrated while we explore.
  3. Rain jacket and clear umbrella – You never know what the weather will bring. Having a cute rain jacket and clear umbrella will ensure you’re prepared but can still be cute in photos! It’s also cooler in the mountains so having a light jacket for when the sun goes down would be helpful.
